Personality:
While on the surface Karkat can be summed up as a rather simple, albeit angry individual with an incredible vocabulary of curses and insults, the truth of the matter is that his personality is much deeper and more complex than one would expect. The first thing that anyone will notice about Karkat is his consistent frustration with everyone and everything around him, adopting the style of a stereotypical raging internet troll in his usual speech, and isn't above supporting his arguments with what appears to be empty logic. He is rarely seen smiling, and is more common to be found screaming, pounding his fists on the keyboard as he types, and expressing his impatience with those he is dealing with. He has a knack for making even the friendliest of people's moods turn sour or even flip out in response to his insults, which are usually rich and imaginative in terms of colourful imagery (one such example being "YOU’RE LIKE A ROCKET PROPELLED SPAZ MAGGOT SPRINGLOADED UP THE ASS OF A PSYCHEDELIC FUCKING FREAKOUT WEASEL ON IDIOT DRUGS").

Despite the angry and harsh exterior that Karkat projects onto those around him, in reality he does care quite deeply for those he considers to be his friends and goes out of his way to help his friends when they are in need; he genuinely desires to helping Eridan and Tavros with their relationship problems, shows great concern for Terezi when she admits she regrets having her blindness cured and expresses her concerns with her relationship with Gamzee, and wished to ensure with Dave that they would still remain friends after they meet up with the other humans. Even though he can be quite verbally hostile, Karkat is one of the least violent trolls in his group, and often times when it comes down to intense situations he will either try to devise some kind of working plan that won't end with violence (calming Gamzee down out of his withdrawal rage, convincing Kanaya to not kill Gamzee, etc.) or straight up stand in shock at what just occurred before him (such as when Eridan went on his violent killing spree, slaying all in the room save for Karkat). Karkat has also been shown to cry more in the webcomic than any of the other trolls he is aligned with. For all his shortcomings when it comes to his social skills with others, Karkat is quite adept in shepherding others towards a particular goal. He was able to gather eleven other trolls with clashing personalities to follow his lead during their SGRUB session and led them to winning their game, thus creating the human universe. He is shown to be a an effective leader, and this has been acknowledged by some of the other trolls.

Karkat is also a bit of a hopeless romantic, in that he has an unusual fascination with troll romance (which is describes through a Quadrant System). His favourite movies are romantic comedies and he often reads romance novels (even if they are considered trashy), and has gone on record saying that his extensive knowledge of romantic movies and novels qualifies him to be a "hardened veteran of romantic studies". This is probably why he is so interested in his friends' romantic endeavours and goes out of his way to help them out with their problems. Despite his intense interest in the field of troll romance, Karkat's own romantic history is far from stellar. A troll's ideal romantic life involves them finding four separate individuals with whom to share various expressions of emotion: Matespritship (which is a concupiscent romance that is closest to human love (or Pity, as Karkat describes it)), Kismesissitude (another concupiscent romance based on strong feelings of hate instead of love), Moiralleageance (a conciliatory romance that involves two trolls keeping each other emotionally grounded and stable), and Auspisticism (wherein one troll acts as a facilitator between two other trolls to keep them from delving too deeply into hatred or violence). Karkat has only ever had one quadrant filled when he entered into a Moirallegeance with Gamzee, but that has since fallen apart, with Karkat stating that it was a one-sided relationship anyway. He had expressed desire to enter into a romantic relationship with Terezi, but his own confusion as to his feelings towards her rendered him unable to proceed with a relationship with her. Despite his Future Self stating that he "wanted her in every quadrant like a desperate fool", he is willing to smother his own feelings and back down when Terezi no longer shows any romantic interest in him, instead stating that his concerns about her wellbeing stem from his looking out for her as a friend rather than from any romantic quest.

Like many of the other characters in the comic, Karkat has a particular typing quirk which defines himself when he speaks in an online chat. He speaks with perfect syntax, but types in all caps. Unlike the other trolls, whose font colours reflect their blood colour and thus their status in troll society, Karkat chooses to instead type in gray font, and even his symbol is the same gray colour. This is because Karkat's blood is bright red, like human blood, a unique mutation among trolls. In a society that places trolls into castes based on their blood colour (rust red, brown, and yellow being the lowest, olive, jade, and teal being middle-class, and blue, purple, violet, and fuchsia being royalty), Karkat's bright red blood places him off the spectrum completely. He is very ashamed of this blood and hides it fiercely, as mutants in troll culture are usually killed on sight. Karkat's blood colour becomes less of an issue after SGRUB when most of the others discover his blood colour (and more or less choose not to care about it), but it is still something that is on his mind, and it's generally assumed that this fear of having his blood discovered and subsequently being killed because of it is what causes him to be so defensive towards others. This also explains his tireless drive in him to become a well-respected individual despite his mutation. Early on in the comic he is shown to be incredibly goal-driven and eager to prove himself a worthy troll, more likely than not to prove that his blood colour shouldn't mean that he is a useless defect in the eyes of his people. Despite this need to prove himself, his shame about his blood colour has made him highly critical of himself, to the point where some of his most fiercest insults are used when he is talking about himself or one of his Past or Future Selves (which is possible via the trolls' chat server Trollian, which has the function to communicate with people from different points in time). He also keeps close on his mind the guilt of his shortcomings and failures, and blames himself for many of the events that had transpired (such as his impatience during his session's frog breeding resulted in him inadvertently giving the human kids' universe cancer and thus making their session unwinnable, the failure on his part to prevent the deaths of his friends (even though he knows that these events were necessary for them to succeed in their future goals), or the romantic fallout between himself and Gamzee and the subsequent suffering Terezi goes through during Gamzee and Terezi's Kismesissitude). His guilt over the events that happened now acts as fuel for his desire to lead and succeed, if only as a means of redemption for his feelings of failure.
